## **ABOUT NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY (NDA)**

The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together before they go on to per-commissioning training.

NDA imparts training to young men, who choose the Armed Forces as their vocation. They are given an intensive education in Science, Technology, Arts and Military subjects. At the end of their three-year course, which is split into six terms, a cadet is awarded a Bachelor’s Degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru University. While a cadet is being prepared intellectually to face the forthcoming challenges of high technology on tomorrow’s battle-field, he is also physically and mentally toughened by a rigorous regimen of physical conditioning which includes drill, swimming, horse-riding and the full gamut of games and sporting activities. In the three years at the Academy, he is transformed from a cadet into a potential officer and a gentleman.

1. a citizen of India, or

2. a subject of Bhutan, or

3. a subject of Nepal, or

4. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

A candidate must be an unmarried male and have attained the age of 16 1/2 years and must not have attained the age 19 years on the 1st January or 1st of July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

Candidates must not marry until they complete their full training. A candidate who marries subsequent to the date of his application, though successful will not be selected for training.

A candidate who marries during training shall be discharged and will be liable to refund all expenditure incurred on him by the Government.

1. For Army wing of National Defence Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

2. For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 (Executive Branch) Course at the Naval Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply.

**(d) Physical Standards :**

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination as per guidelines given :

Candidates are advised to rectify minor defects/ailments in order to speed up finalization of medical examination conducted at the Military Hospital after being recommended at the SSB. The undermentioned ailments are considered, common minor ailments :

Wax (Ears), Deviated Nasal Septum, Hydrocele/Phimosis, Overweight/Underweight, Under sized Chest, Piles, Gynaecomastia, Tonsillitis, Varicolored

A candidate recommended by the Services Selection Board will undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers. Only those candidates will be admitted to the academy who are declared fit by the Medical Board. The proceedings of the Medical Board are confidential and will not be divulged to anyone. However the candidates declared unfit will be intimated by the President of the Medical Board and the procedure for request for an Appeal Medical Board will also be intimated to the candidate.

Candidates declared unfit during Appeal Medical Board will be intimated about the provision of Review Medical Board.

(a) The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely in interfere with the efficient performance of military duties.

(b) There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects or under weight. The candidate should not be overweight or obese.

(c) The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cms. (162.5 cms for Air Force)

**NDA Selection Procedure**

Union Public Service Commission – UPSC conducts NDA (National Defence Academy) exam, NDA-I, NDA-II . The candidates who are eligible apply through online and offline application mode. Minimum Educational Qualification is 12th Class pass in 10+2 Pattern. The selection process is based on Written Test & Interview . The details are as follows…

**Selection Procedure:**

UPSC conducts NDA (National Defence Academy) Exam in Two Stages.

The exam will constitute 2 subjects, Maths and General Ability Test and each subject is given the time limit 2 ½ Hours, maximum marks for Maths is 300 & General ability is 600. The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The question papers of Mathematics & Part B of General Ability Test will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English.

**II. Interview**:

Qualified candidates in the written examination will be called for Interview conducted by SSB (Services selection board). For Army, Navy Wings & 10 +2 Entry Scheme candidates need to undergo Intelligence Test & Personality Test, but for Air Force Wing the candidates must attend a Pilot Aptitude Test. The Interview Consists both Intelligence and Personality Test. In interview the candidates will be put to Intelligence Tests both Verbal and Non Verbal Tests based knowledge to assess their intelligence, they will also go to Group Tests such as Group Discussions, Group Planning, Outdoor Group Tasks, and asked to give Brief Lectures on Specified Subjects.

**Two stage selection procedure**:

The selection procedure based on Psychological Aptitude Test and Intelligence Test. Candidates who qualified in stage 1 are required to appear stage 2. The qualified candidates need to submit all the Original certificates . A single combined list is prepared on the basis of total marks secured by them in the Written Examination and the Services Selection Board Tests. The final selection based on the number of vacancies for Army, Navy, Air Force of with reference to their order in the event of their final selection to one service will not admit to other remaining services.

**N.B**: Air force given pilot aptitude test only once for the candidate’s .The test selected candidates will go to every subsequent Interview.

The question paper in English will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English and workman like use of words. The syllabus covers various aspects like : Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended text to test the candidate’s proficiency in English.

- The question paper on General Knowledge will broadly cover the subjects : Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Social Studies, Geography and Current Events.

** 1. Algebra:**

Concept of a set, operations on sets, Venn diagrams. De Morgan laws. Cartesian product, relation, equivalence relation. Representation of real numbers on a line. Complex numbers – basic properties, modulus, argument, cube roots of unity. Binary system of numbers. Conversion of a number in decimal system to binary system and vice-versa.

Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic progressions. Quadratic equations with real coefficients. Solution of linear inequations of two variables by graphs. Permutation and Combination. Binomial theorem and its application. Logarithms and their applications.

**2. Matrices and Determinants:**

Types of matrices, operations on matrices. Determinant of a matrix, basic properties of determinants. Adjoint and inverse of a square matrix, Applications – Solution of a system of linear equations in two or three unknowns by Cramer’s rule and by Matrix Method.
